What Happens to All the Outfits Worn at Cannes by Celebrities After the Event
Cannes Film Festival has become known over the years as the most glitzy event on the celebrity fashion calendar, with celebrities dressing up to the nines and impressing all who watch them with their dazzling outfits. But what happens to all these beautiful gowns and suits after they’ve been worn on the red carpet and in the front rows? And what can you do if you have an amazing outfit that has been sat at the back of your wardrobe gathering dust?
How much do these celebs make in
endorsement deals?
It's no secret that celebs make a lot of money in endorsement deals. But how much do they make for wearing outfits at Cannes? According to reports, A-listers can earn up to $500,000 for just attending the annual film festival in France. That's not including the money they make from actual endorsements! So, how much do you think these celebs make for their Cannes outfits? The rich and famous who attend are able to sell off any clothes or accessories they wear during the event.
The typical price for
each item is around €250 ($260). Sometimes, celebrities will auction off their
entire outfit after it ends its run on the red carpet—which usually lasts about
30 minutes—for as much as €10,000 ($11,000). But if someone wants an outfit so
badly they're willing to pay more than what it's worth on eBay (usually around
€200), then celebrities have been known to let them borrow it instead of
selling it outright. For example, Lady Gaga was spotted wearing a gown with
puffy sleeves and feathers by Zac Posen for Louis Vuitton that she had
originally worn when she attended the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. When it came
time to promote her own album Joanne later that year, the singer wore another
Zac Posen dress in similar style to her first dress because she liked it so
much.
Where do they get their pieces from?
Most of the celebrities' outfits at
Cannes are rented from designer clothing companies. The big corporates loan out
their latest pieces to stars in order for them to be seen on the red carpet, in
hopes that it will generate more sales.
After the festival is over, the
outfits are either returned to the designers or sold off. Some of the gowns end
up being auctioned off for charity.
It's estimated that each year, there
are about 1,000 designer outfits worn at Cannes. With such high demands, these
companies have to be strategic about how they loan out their clothing. They
need to make sure that every single outfit has been accounted for and they also
want to avoid a shortage if something happens with an outfit during the event.
How do they dispose of their clothing,
accessories and shoes after wearing them on an iconic red carpet event?
One might think that the celebrities who attend the annual film festival in Cannes, France, dispose of their clothing, accessories and shoes after wearing them on an iconic red carpet event. However, that is not always the case. Some celebrities have been known to keep their outfits and wear them again. Others donate their clothing to charity. And still others sell their clothing to consignment shops. In many cases, they are expensive garments with a high resale value. Many women may be able to make a profit from recycling these items into new clothes for themselves or for profit.
Some may want to make a statement about environmental
conservation, which can be achieved through donating the clothing items rather
than destroying them or selling them for profit as second-hand goods. It all
depends on what you want your message to be about how you want your voice heard
when it comes down to conserving resources for future generations. For example,
some stars may opt to donate their gowns so those less fortunate have access to
luxurious attire. They will also experience the glory of Cannes and see the
best that fashion has to offer, without having any financial risk involved.
Other stars will take advantage of this opportunity and sell their dresses for
profit. Either way, sustainability efforts are still being made one way or
another!
Is there any place where we can buy
these red carpet items?
It's hard to believe that another Cannes Film Festival has come and gone. For two weeks, celebrities from all over the world descend on the French Riviera to attend screenings and parties. And of course, they bring their A-game when it comes to fashion. But what happens to all those amazing outfits worn by celebrities at Cannes after the event is over? One company in France might have an answer for us. Fashion Cares is a sustainable initiative created in 2002 by Hélène Rochas, wife of Yves Saint Laurent, who passed away in 2008.
With more than 20 years experience in
the fashion industry before joining her husband’s house as creative director,
she wanted to create something meaningful to keep his legacy alive: The
non-profit organization partners with designers and brands like Ralph Lauren
and Moncler to collect unwanted clothes which are then sold in a bi-annual
charity auction held during Paris Fashion Week. The items are shipped across
Europe where they are redistributed locally through charities like Unicef
France or social projects such as Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
